From Berlin to the Barossa - College connection endures

Elsa Matthus joined Faith College from Berlin, Germany back in 2003/4 as a part of a student exchange program. Residing with Mark and Gloria Rosenzweig at Moculta, during her time in Australia the city girl fell in love with farm life and the Barossa community. The stark change from Berlin to the Barossa inspired Elsa for a future career to include working with plants.
During her time at Faith, Elsa had a keen passion for the arts and participated in Faith’s Musical West Side Story. Upon Elsa’s return to Germany, she commenced a Biology Degree before travelling to Cambridge for five years to complete her PhD in Biology. Elsa recalls ‘I had to write my PhD in English, and luckily as a result of my time in Australia I felt more confident and comfortable in articulating my work.’
Elsa and partner Ben Rosenthal recently visited Faith College during a month-long stay with her original host parents and thoroughly enjoyed touring Faith’s new facilities and reminiscing. Their recent travels also included the Gold Coast, River Murray, Yorke Peninsula and SE Asia, India and Nepal.
Elsa now plans to seek work as a Plant Scientist with a particular focus on Agriculture, Biodiversity, Sustainability and Food Security, looking at the breeding of plants that can adapt to changes in our climate and soil.
Elsa plans to welcome our staff and students later in the year when the German Trip contingent lands in Berlin.
